Even today, Hochelaga bears the imprint of its working class past and its social precariousness. Underpaid workers, precarious artists, prostitution, drug addicts... the clichés attached to this underprivileged neighborhood speak volumes about the weight of its past. The reality is more nuanced. The social mix is more present than it seems. Hochelaga... attracts today more young professionals and families with young children who see the potential of certain residences, after a few strokes of the brush and other renovation work.

ONTARIO WALKWAY

On the Promenade Ontario - and, particularly, on its "pedestrian only" section - you can find all kinds of styles, punk, hipster, rock, bohemian... You can store, have a drink, sit on a public bench... and all this, just a few steps from downtown. It must be said that the Promenade Ontario offers all the animation one could wish for. An array of small merchants and unique stores inhabit the area, in the spirit of the neighborhood: café-bistros, restaurants, microbreweries, gourmet fast-food, stores selling eco-friendly products, local creators, local talent ... Place Simon-Valois - or Place Valois - is the other lively place and space developed for relaxation of this portion Hochelega-Maisonneuve (HoMa). The pedestrianization of the street contributes a lot to the charm of these commercial streets that one discovers at its pace. The other strong point of the neighbourhood: its Poetry Street east of Pie IX Boulevard, on Desjardins Avenue, a project initiated by the Maison de la culture Maisonneuve in collaboration with the poets of the neighbourhood. About twenty poems are hung from the branches of trees and glued to the walls of the neighbourhood. Readings, poetry workshops in the Cité, "Dehors est un poème" activities, liven up the street every summer.

MERCIER-EAST

For many people, choosing the Hochelaga neighborhood means choosing to live in Mercier East, otherwise known as Tétraultville, the neighborhood of reference and the main living area for families. The main attraction of this neighborhood is the Promenade Bellerive, an immense urban park 2.2 kilometers long, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River and facing the Boucherville islands. In addition to the many activities and summer shows, it is the place from which a river shuttle leaves for Île Charron. A cultural center, family homes and sports facilities are all charming assets of this relatively unknown neighbourhood. Beyond the neighbourhood, the borough is the gateway to many family outings: Biodome, Botanical Garden, Planetarium, StarCité cinema, several arenas and neighborhood pools..
